Abstract Terrain Art

Inspired by my boss’s custom birthday card for his daughter where he used a sphere packing technique to optimise point placement within an area, I wanted to try my hand at doing this for terrain. It turns out the actual workflow for doing this is pretty tricky and there are no ‘out of the box’ tools to magically make this happen. After a fair bit of searching I found a great tutorial from Lester Banks on the science behind it and was able to replicate pretty easily (https://lesterbanks.com/2018/07/pack-non-intersecting-spheres-houdini/).

So the below are a few examples of applying this techniques and a ton of other over the top elements to create some cool looking images.
